Thomas B. Coopwood, M.D., F.A.C.S. is retired from a distinguished career as a surgeon, serving the Austin community for over 30 years.
During his career, Dr. Coopwood served as Chief of Surgery at Brackenridge Hospital from 1980 to 1985, Chief of Staff at Brackenridge Hospital in 1986 and Chief of Surgery at St. David's Hospital from 1988 to 1990. Additionally, he was a member of the following societies: Travis County Medical Society (President 1995), Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Texas Surgical Society, and Surgical Society of Austin (President 1992).
Brackenridge Hospital and Travis County Medical Society (TCMS) honored Dr. Coopwood as "Physician of the Year" in 1988 and 2004, respectively. In retirement he has served as President of the Retired Physicians Organization of the Travis County Medical Society. He was elected to the Board of Art Alliance Austin and served as its Chair for 2008-09. He is also a member of the 2008-09 Essential Class of Leadership Austin, a member of the Latino Healthcare Forum Advisory Board and was recently elected to the board of the Northwest Austin Civic Association (NWACA). In 2011 he was awarded the Austin Business Journal Health Care Heroes Special Achievement Award, their highest honor.
The Austin City Council reappointed Dr. Coopwood to his third term on the Board of Managers in December 2011, which will expire in 2015.
